ROSSITER VOLUME XXIX BREVAED COLLEGE, MAKCH 2, 1962 NUMBER Dr. Howard Wilkinson Was Well Received Martin To Speak To B.S.U. Group On March 11 Th€ Reverend Charles L. Mar- j tin, Jr., an associate secretary in the youth department of the Ja pan Baptist Convention, will be special speaker at the First Bap tist church on Sunday, March 11, at 6:30 o’clock. Mr. Martin will speak on the challenge confront ing today’s student in the mis sion of the church. Mr. Martin is qualified both by experience and training for this subject. In addition to his responsibilities in student work in Japan, he serves as associate pastor of Mejiro ga Oka Baptist Church, Tokyo, teaches a Bible class for students, and writes curriculum material for the Ja pan Baptist Convention’s train ing organization. He began his college career as an architectural student at Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn Univer sity) and transferred to Howard College, Birmingham, where he received the Bachelor O'f Art^ degree. Graduate degi-ees earned are the Bachelor of Divinity and Master of Theology from South ern Baptist Theological Semi nary, Louisville, Kentucky. His wartime service with the U. S. Army Air Force furnished another part of his experience. As a bombardier on a B-29, he flew SI missions over Japan and received the Distinguished Fly ing Cross and “a few other me dals.’’ One day he saw a Japanese —Turn to Page Three 1 Lecture Series Climaxed With Communion Mi.-is Diana Brack.ett was named the 1962 Delphian Sweetheart. Di ana is a native of Lawndale, N. C., and v> ill eraduate this June. Miss Pat On- from Henderson ville, N. C., and Miss Barbara Oliver from Winston - Salem, N. C., were named the sophomore attendants.^ The freshmen atendants are Miss Sara Moores from Winter Park, Florida, and Jeanie Cleary from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Selective Service Test To Be Soon Poetry Contest Is Announced Every Selective Service regis trant who is a full-time college student is obliged to take the Selective Service College Quali fication Test. The test is given to provide information for the use of local boards in considering —Turn to Page Two Sally Miles Elected May Queen Miss Sally Miles from Eving- ton, Virginia, was elected May Qucen in the election held Feb ruary 19. Her maid-of-honor is Doris Lawson from Winston - Salem, North Carolina. The remainder of the court consists of four sophomores and four freshmen. The sophomores are Kenlon Carlson, Linda Sheffield, Kitty Whitworth and Betsy Wren. The freshman are Sandy Hill, Jean- nie Keener, Ann Miller, and Sherry Patrick. The queen and her court will be presented at the annual May D'ance sponsored by the fresh- m-an class. The freshmen have already begun working on the dance, and it sihould prove to be a great success. Reverend Howard C. Wilktn- £on, chaplain to the University and Director of Religious Life at Duke University, led the wor ship services on Brevard Cam pus during The Religious phasis Week from Februarj' 25 to March 1. Mr. Wilkinson useid as his theme for the week, “Am I My Brother’s Keeper?” At each s€r\'ice he spoke on a dif ferent aspect of that theme: “The Church Looks at the World, Should the Church Get Out of Politics, Christianity and Com munism, Christianity and Sex, Call No Man Common, and The Race for Peace.” The week was climaxed by a communion ser vice held Ttiursday morning at 7:00. The religious emphasis on campus was not confined to the services that were held in the C. C. B. Each afternoon and eadh night Mr. Wilkinson was avidJ- able to the students for indivi dual or group conferences. Professor Nelson Adams led the igroup hymn singing and Professor Thomas Cousins di rected the College Clhoir. The hymn for the week was “O Brother Man.” Chaplain C. Ed ward Roy was in charge of plans Ifor Religious Emphasis Week and Louis Miles was faculty ad visor to the Planning Committee-. Any student may submit as many as five original poems, each consisting of no moce than 48 lines. C. State College’s Diamond Jubi lee and the Land Grant College Centenial was premiered during a special concert last Friday night February 23, at 8 o’clock in Reynold’s Coliseum on campus of N. C. State College. The program was presented l)(F State College Symphonic Band and Men’s Glee Club. “Of Earth and Atom” was the featured number in a program of 12 selec tions. This composition will be fea tured again at the Chancellor’s Convocation on March 6. Mr. Cousins was a special guesf at the performance. Mr. Cousins, is a member of the music faculty and resident composer at Brevard College and conductor of the Asheville Sym phony. Mr. Cousins has received Com missions from the Greensbona City Schools to compose a choral symiplhony and from the woman’s College of the University d North Carolina to do a festival prelude.
